Argentina won the shootout 4–2, after a very exciting game that ended with the much-anticipated matchup between Messi, 35 years old, and Kylian Mbappe, who plays for France.
At Lusail Stadium, France's best player scored a hat-trick, the first in a FifaWorld Cup final since 1966. However, France still lost.
Messi looked like he was going to get the one major award he was missing with ease as Argentina sailed to a two-goal lead.
All of this changed when Mbappe scored two goals in two minutes at the end of the game. This blew the game wide open and made it a match for the ages.
In the 23rd minute, Angel di Maria was fouled by Ousmane Dembele, which led to a penalty kick that Messi scored to give Argentina the lead. He was the first player in the history of the World Cup to score in the group stage, the last 16, the quarter-final, the semi-final, and the final of the same tournament.
Then, 13 minutes later, he added a nice touch to a great counterattack that led to Brighton's Alexis Mac Allister setting up Di Maria for the second goal.
Argentina didn't have to worry about anything until the last few minutes when Mbappe gave France a chance with a penalty kick and then tied the game with a beautiful volley.

And yet, it was Mbappe who gave France new life in those incredible seconds when they went from looking like timid losers to like they could win. After Messi put Argentina back in front, Mbappe scored his third goal from the penalty spot to make it 3-2.
During a thrilling stretch of extra time in which both teams had chances to win, France could have won if Martinez hadn't saved Muani's last-second shot with his outstretched foot.
Instead, Mbappe won't find solace in history because, at the end of this exciting show, he was hugged by his teammates and French President Emmanuel Macron.
